The Parrot Empire

Friday

The house is quiet except for the soft ticking of the kitchen clock. Mia pads into the living room in her socks and finds Vesper already at the table, surrounded by half-finished sketches. Mom, what are you drawing? Vesper looks up with a tired smile. A new character for tonight’s story. A little fox who can’t decide which path to take. Mia pulls out a chair and sits close. Is the fox like me? Sometimes I can’t decide either. Vesper sets the pencil down and takes her daughter’s hand. The fox is a little like all of us, sweetheart.

Thaddeus appears in the doorway with two mugs of tea, steam curling up between them. He sets one in front of Vesper and the other in front of Mia. I thought you two might need these. Philippa’s voice calls from down the hall. Dad! I can’t find my red socks! Thaddeus chuckles and calls back, Check under your bed, little explorer! Vesper sips her tea and watches him go. You always know where everything is. Thaddeus’s voice drifts back. Only because you leave everything everywhere. They both laugh softly. Mia grins into her mug. You two are weird.

After the girls leave for school, Vesper and Thaddeus stand at the sink together, washing the breakfast dishes. She hands him a plate. I had a dream last night that we were sailing. Just the four of us. No land in sight. Thaddeus rinses the plate and sets it on the rack. Did we have a map? Vesper shakes her head. No. But we weren’t scared. Thaddeus dries his hands and turns to her. That’s because we were together. She leans against his shoulder for a moment. He kisses the top of her head. I love you.

Around midday, Thaddeus calls from the car. Flat tire again. Vesper grabs the spare and drives out to meet him. They work side by side on the roadside, the sun warm on their backs. She hands him the wrench. You know, if you keep doing this, I’m going to start charging for roadside assistance. Thaddeus grins up at her. What kind of payment did you think of? Vesper smiles without a response.

That evening, the power stays on, but they gather in the living room anyway. Thaddeus reads aloud from „Was ist was…“ book while Philippa curls against his side and Mia sketches quietly at the table. With his other hand Thaddeus is holding Vesper tight, her head resting against his. The fox in my story finally chose a path, she says softly. And? Thaddeus asks. It led him home. And in that quiet room, with the girls safe and the book still open, they all understood why everything was exactly where it belonged.
