The Parrot Empire

Monday

Vesper was already in the kitchen, not with notebooks this time, but with a big calendar spread across the table. She was circling dates and writing little notes in the margins. New week, new plans, she said, tapping the pen against her lip. Thaddeus came in, tying his robe, and poured himself tea. He looked over her shoulder. You circled every Monday during the summer vacation. Vesper grinned. Because every Monday deserves to be special. Mia wandered in, rubbing her eyes. What are we doing today? Something different, Vesper said. We’re going to the market. The real one, with the loud vendors and the fresh bread. Philippa appeared in the doorway, already dressed. Can I bring my sketchbook? Of course, sweetheart, Vesper said, pulling her close. You can draw all the colors.

After breakfast, they all piled into the car. The market was already buzzing when they arrived. Vesper led the way, stopping at every stall, tasting olives and cheese, chatting with the vendors like old friends. Thaddeus kept the girls close, letting them pick out fruit and bread. Mia held up a bright red apple. Dad, this one’s perfect. Thaddeus smiled. Then it’s yours. Philippa tugged on Vesper’s sleeve. Mom, look at the flowers. Vesper knelt down beside her. Which ones do you like? The purple ones, Philippa whispered. They look like they’re dreaming. Vesper bought a small bunch and tucked one behind Philippa’s ear. Then you can dream with them.

By afternoon, the sun was high and warm. They found a little café at the edge of the market square. Vesper ordered coffee and pastries while Thaddeus helped the girls wash their hands. Mia leaned against Thaddeus’s arm. Today really feels like holiday. Thaddeus ruffled her hair and smiled. Philippa was already drawing the market scene in her sketchbook. Vesper watched her, something soft in her face. You see everything, don’t you? Philippa looked up. Only the pretty things. Vesper reached over and squeezed her hand. That’s a good way to see the world.

On the drive home, the car was quiet but content. Mia fell asleep against the window. Philippa hummed softly to herself. Vesper reached across and took Thaddeus’s hand. Thank you for today, she said. He glanced at her, eyes warm. You made it happen, precious. In the evening, they ate dinner on the terrace. The sea was calm, the air cool. Vesper lit candles while Thaddeus served the food. Mia was still sleepy but happy. Philippa showed everyone her drawings from the day. After dinner, they sat together watching the waves. Vesper leaned her head on Thaddeus’s shoulder. New week, she said quietly. New everything. Thaddeus kissed the top of her head. Same us, though. She smiled. Same us. The sea kept its steady rhythm…
