The morning began not in the chaotic kitchen, but down at The Rusty Anchor, a breezy little café sitting right on the edge of the boardwalk. Breakfast, however, was no less of a glorious disaster. The wooden table was quickly buried under giant plates of fluffy berry pancakes, runny eggs, three different pots of fruit jam, and a glass of hot chocolate that Mia had already somehow knocked slightly sideways, leaving a cocoa puddle on Thaddeus’s shirt. „Mia, stop using your toast as a catapult for blueberries,“ Philippa muttered quietly, her eyes fixed on her neatly folded waffle as he nudged her elbow back onto her own side of the bench. „It’s not a catapult, it’s a launcher testing trajectory!“ Mia declared loudly, grinning with full-voltage energy.
Across the table, Thaddeus took a deep sip of his tea, looking over at Vesper with a twinkle in his eye. „The sea air is good, but today calls for tactical combat.“ Vesper raised an eyebrow over her croissant, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips. „If ‚tactical combat‘ means you diving face-first into the dirt again like last month, I’m bringing extra napkins.“ „Hey, that was a strategic tactical roll!“ Thaddeus defended smoothly, leaning over to steal a piece of bacon off Vesper’s plate. Philippa sat quietly, both hands wrapped around her warm mug, watching the gentle waves roll onto the sand outside the window. „Are we… playing paintball again? What if it hurts more today?“ she asked softly, her voice small and cautious. „Not if you’ve got me on your team, Pippa,“ Thaddeus said warmly, bumping her shoulder gently with his. „We’re a team today. Unstoppable.“
By early afternoon, they were geared up at the outdoor beachside paintball park. The dressing-up phase was a comedy in itself: Mia had pulled her camouflage jumpsuit on so fast her ponytail was stuck inside the collar, looking like an over-eager little ninja. Vesper adjusted her mask with practiced ease, Thaddeus was making dramatic poses in his chest guard, while Philippa hovered nervously, her tiny helmet tilting slightly over her eyes until Thaddeus leaned down to fix the strap for her. Team 1: Mia & Vesper, Team 2 Thaddeus & Philippa. Behind the wooden barricades, paint was already splattering against the timber. “Mum! Move left! Cover the flank!“ Mia barked, crouching low in the mud, her eyes wide behind her goggles. „We need victory! Shoot the blue barrel!“ „Mia, sweetie, calm your heart rate down,“ Vesper laughed, ducking smoothly as a green paint splatter exploded on the wall behind them. „Watch and learn. You don’t rush, you wait.“ With effortless precision, Vesper leaned out, snapped off two fast shots, and forced Thaddeus straight into a patch of nettles. „See? Mom’s got game.“ Absolute savage!“ Mia cheered, practically jumping up and down in her boots.
On the other side, Philippa was trembling behind a stack of thick tractor tires, holding her marker close to her chest. „Dad… they’re so fast. Mum is really good. What if I let you down?“ Thaddeus crouched right beside her, ignoring the paint popping above them. He put a big, steady hand on her back, his voice dropping into that calm, grounding tone that always made her feel safe. „Look at me, Pippa. You can’t let me down. It’s just us having fun out here. Hold the marker right here…“ He gently guided her small hands onto the grip, steadying her shaking arms. „Look through the sight. See where Mia’s yellow boots are sticking out? On three, we fire together. Ready?“ Philippa looked at him, feeling the warmth of his steady confidence push away her fear. She nodded, taking a breath. „Ready.“ „One… two… three!“ They both pulled their triggers. A double splash of bright blue paint struck Mia right across her chest guard. „No way! I’m hit!“ Mia screeched in disbelief, falling back into the dirt as Vesper burst into proud laughter. Philippa let out a huge squeal of delight, jumping into Thaddeus’s arms for a muddy, paint-streaked hug. „We got her! Dad, we actually got her!“ „Told you, little one!“ Thaddeus laughed, swinging her around. „We’re a great team.“
By dusk, the thrill of the game gave way to a cozy evening back in their own backyard. As the sky turned a bruised shade of violet and pink, the girls insisted on setting up the big four-person tent on the grass. Thaddeus helped them stake the poles, while Vesper lit the small stone fire pit nearby. Soon, the air was filled with the rich, smoky smell of burning pine, roasted sausages, and golden, gooey marshmallows toasted on long wooden sticks. They sat close together around the flickering flames, sticky-fingered and tired, talking softly as the stars began to peek through the dark. „I get the left side of the tent,“ Mia announced around a mouthful of marshmallow. „You can have it, as long as you don’t kick in your sleep,“ Philippa whispered, smiling lazily as she leaned her head against Thaddeus’s arm. Eventually, around ten o’clock, the girls zipped themselves into the tent, giggling under their sleeping bags until their voices drifted off into quiet, rhythmic breathing. Thaddeus and Vesper cleaned up the fire pit and headed inside to bed.
At 2:00 AM, the back door creaked open. Thaddeus, sleeping lightly, sat up instantly. Two small, shadowed figures were standing in the hallway—Philippa clutching her stuffed bunny tightly, and Mia, looking unusually quiet, holding her flashlight. „Dad?“ Philippa whispered, her voice trembling slightly. „There are weird noises outside. The wind keeps banging the wooden fence and it… it’s kind of creepy.“ „And the shadows look like giant bears,“ Mia admitted softly, dropping her usual bravado for a rare moment of honesty. Thaddeus smiled softly in the dark, swinging his legs out of bed. „Bears in the garden, huh? We better go check it out.“ Vesper stirred beside him, rubbing her eyes and smiling warmly at the sight of the two girls. „Wait for me,“ she murmured, pulling her soft robe around her shoulders. „I’m not letting you fight the garden bears alone.“ Together, the four of them padded quietly out into the cool night air, stepping across the damp grass toward the dimly lit tent. Thaddeus unzipped the flap and crawled in first, laying out the oversized double sleeping bags, with Vesper sliding in right beside him. Mia and Philippa didn’t hesitate—they dove straight into the middle, wedging themselves safely between their parents. „See? No bears,“ Thaddeus whispered, wrapping a big arm over both of them, pulling the heavy blankets up to their chins. „Just the wind,“ Vesper added gently, pressing a kiss into Mia’s tangled hair and holding Philippa’s hand under the blanket. Curled together in a tangled, cozy heap on the tent floor, with the cool night breeze rustling the canvas above them, the four of them drifted back to sleep—messy, exhausted, and perfectly together.
